Just finished my first year in my 1980 Vanagon. I learned alot about living simply, what I really need and what I can do without. It has been an excellent adventure.

I do plan to go solar as well, but being up here in the perpetual grey & wet of seattle makes me think a generator is a wise backup option.

I just posted a thread...I am getting a van tomorrow & will be living in it full time & customizing the inside to house my MIDI production studio after I reseat a window & winterize it. I am VERY excited to be getting away from the rent trap & having something of my OWN that I can put lots of work & love into & take with me, not to mention using it as the vehicle to get, anywhere I want to go :D I am going to custom mount a camp kitchen & get a couple of small whisper quiet generators for when I can't plug in, & will have both electric & catalytic propane space heaters, & a small dorm-size fridge & camp stove/oven combo. I hope that if I get enough of the customization done over the fall & winter that i will be able to take it across country to go do a studio internship in NYC in the spring.

I will starting/keeping a blogspot with progress photos & I will post the link once that has started up.

Not sure that I can answer that question easly,
been living in small rigs for about 27 years ( the last 10 in a `70 ford 1 ton van) and convert things to live-in rigs for others.
Working on transforming a cargo trailer for someone currently.
Not on-line often but would be happy to answer some direct questions.

Hey William,
I have an 82 Westfalia myself. I've got a couple of links/groups for you: The Samba (www.thesamba.com) has great forums and links for parts. Then there's a couple of Yahoo groups, van dwellers and vw fulltimers.
Hope these are helpful

Tara (and others), If you're still out there, I was wondering how it is going living in a van. Tommorrow I will pick up my 1980 vanagon and begin the adventure. I am hoping for some insights.

Thanks,

ah, but my plan is this: Keep the job I have, but have mobile living quarters. On my days off, I can pack up and go where ever I want to, but during the week I've got what I need just a few hundred feet away. All my amenities are close by, so that's not really an issue either.

So I've moved from a bus to a van.

I can drive and park everywhere now!

But it's small and I have too much stuff. A lot of it is food (five gallon buckets of rice, oats, beans, TVP) that I'll be giving to a friend soon, which will open up some space. But still...

If you live in a van, what do you have in it? How do you arrange things?

Thanks,
