Van living?

So I've moved from a bus to a van.

I can drive and park everywhere now!

But it's small and I have too much stuff. A lot of it is food (five gallon buckets of rice, oats, beans, TVP) that I'll be giving to a friend soon, which will open up some space. But still...

If you live in a van, what do you have in it? How do you arrange things?

Thanks,
Tara

I did it for about a year in an old vw; as you said you can drive and park anywhere so I just kept enough food etc. for a few days at time and stuck with the basics. Roof racks are nice!

I'm interested in finding out as much as I can about this since that's about to become my life in 2007 and beyond. The plan is to be as camoflaged as possible while still residing in LA.

Any and all commentary is welcome.

a trailer for your table, chairs, cooking gear and the tools of your trade ( think stuff you can make and sell- espresso? lampwork beads?)
those lock up ones are good.
try and go to quartsite this winter for a great look at how people live and make a living on the road.

ah, but my plan is this: Keep the job I have, but have mobile living quarters. On my days off, I can pack up and go where ever I want to, but during the week I've got what I need just a few hundred feet away. All my amenities are close by, so that's not really an issue either.

Where do folks find to park (overnight etc) that they aren't constantly being run off, told "no overnight parking" or "sorry, you can't just camp out here"?

Tara (and others), If you're still out there, I was wondering how it is going living in a van. Tommorrow I will pick up my 1980 vanagon and begin the adventure. I am hoping for some insights.

    Thanks,
    william

      Hey William,
I have an 82 Westfalia myself. I've got a couple of links/groups for you: The Samba (www.thesamba.com) has great forums and links for parts. Then there's a couple of Yahoo groups, van dwellers and vw fulltimers.
      Hope these are helpful

I've been using a van as a non-attached living space addition to my home. I just posted comments about it, see "Van Room" at the Cheap Shelter tribe. What do you think?

Not sure that I can answer that question easly,
been living in small rigs for about 27 years ( the last 10 in a `70 ford 1 ton van) and convert things to live-in rigs for others.
Working on transforming a cargo trailer for someone currently.
Not on-line often but would be happy to answer some direct questions.

I just posted a thread...I am getting a van tomorrow & will be living in it full time & customizing the inside to house my MIDI production studio after I reseat a window & winterize it. I am VERY excited to be getting away from the rent trap & having something of my OWN that I can put lots of work & love into & take with me, not to mention using it as the vehicle to get, anywhere I want to go :D I am going to custom mount a camp kitchen & get a couple of small whisper quiet generators for when I can't plug in, & will have both electric & catalytic propane space heaters, & a small dorm-size fridge & camp stove/oven combo. I hope that if I get enough of the customization done over the fall & winter that i will be able to take it across country to go do a studio internship in NYC in the spring.

I will starting/keeping a blogspot with progress photos & I will post the link once that has started up.

I do plan to go solar as well, but being up here in the perpetual grey & wet of seattle makes me think a generator is a wise backup option.

Just finished my first year in my 1980 Vanagon. I learned alot about living simply, what I really need and what I can do without. It has been an excellent adventure.
