Re: raise the roof
Sun, September 10, 2006 - 4:17 PMwe had welders raise the roof on our 87 thomas built and its really quite wonderful. they cut below and above the windows, welded in longer "ribs" and sided it over with sheet metal. then we selectively placed windows where we wanted them. as a result the bus is 12.5 ft tall and gorgeous. the front is a bit complicated--they essentially kept the original roof over the drivers seat and welded a new, sloped roof right over it--so the front is aerodynamic and we have a storage loft inside where the original roof still remains. i'll try to figure out how to post a picture... -

Re: raise the roof
Tue, September 19, 2006 - 7:38 PMit cost us 4 grand to raise the roof (woop woop) and another 1.5 grand to put the windows back in--we might have done more if we'd had more. my welders were angels sent by the universe, right on time as always, equipped with vision, wimsy, love and a huge sense of humor. they say it might cost more if they ever did such a project again--now that they really know what it entails. it wasnt cheap, for sure, but well worth it. we gained a large bedroom loft in back with a sizable crafting/storage space beneath it (which could also have become a second bedroom for our kids, a small storage/spare bed loft in front, tons of storage and stretching room for my tall man. i loved it! i still love it now that its our friend ana's new home. -

Re: raise the roof
Fri, September 22, 2006 - 7:31 AMhey thanks Hobbit for all the info..that is a lot of money, but I could see how it would be well worth it. Moss and have been kicking around a few ideas about roof raising and that is certainly one of them.
We also looked at the classic, you know..vw on top, but with a few differences. We were thinking of getting an ol split window kind, then cutting the whole thing in half, lengthwise and spreading it out so it's the width of the bus, then filling it in with sheet metal/ribbing on the top. Then on the side of the bus we could put sheet metal up from the bus up to the VW windows..paint it all the same color and it no longer looks like a vw, but more like that's just the way the bus is made.
Then there is the wooden box on top, which is also a possibility.Sigh...so many choices. I have always liked metal roof raises as oposed to wooden ones, but the cost difference is extreme.
Anyway, thanks for the info, so are you not living in that bus now ?? -

Re: raise the roof
Mon, September 25, 2006 - 3:04 PMno we moved out about 2 years ago when i was 6 months pregnant and my husband broke his arm--it became impossible to do all the hauling that our lifestyle required. but we just sold it to a dear friend--you should check her photos of the new paint job! the bus is happier being a home than just sitting in the yard next to the angora bunny. i still feel pangs everytime i say we sold it though! the vw idea sounds really interesting--you seem hip to the key points which are: metal and aerodynamic, i think. yay buses! -

Another option is to get ahold of an ole cheap bus wouldnt even have to be running and cut the the top off of it from the bottom of the windows up and then put it ontop of your bus ive thought about doing this with the diffrent buses ive owned and have figured out diffrent ways that would make it a pretty simple project.the hardest part would be getting the big piece of the cut bus on top of the bus your adding it to.
It would make it alot simpler if you could find sumone with a fork lift or backhoe.to help rasie the cut bus onto the other bus.
Also if you deside to ever go this route and are in washington i have axess to a backhoe and i know were a couple reeeeeeally cheap donor buses could be gotten!
Just thought id let ya know!!:):)
hope you and moss are doing good and have ya had that lil babe i herd you were expecting??:)
Josh:)
