I really need some info on Veggie oil convertions.... We have a 1990 detroit deisel v8 in a 42ft school bus... and about $1000 to spend on a conversion..
Will the wieght of a 55 gallon tank of oil it self give us problems??
Will our bus have enough power on veggie to make it cross country and back?? over the Rockies??
WIll we end up having to replace the injecters a million times due to them gumming up???
my friend tells me just to run it on bio diesel but I am so stuck on Veggie oil...
What do you think?...
Help????
Has anyone been doing this for years???
oh and one more question... what about using a water heater tank as an oil tank??

Thanks for your help,

  • I am invovled with a similar project starting in Boston. We are in the planning stages, but the research I have done shows that it is possible. I would make sure your filtering element/racor is changed often. We want to run on veggie too & have thought of adding propane injection. I have heard that it runs about $200 bucks & that it will give you almost instant power with a flick of a switch for passing & climbing. Instead of using multiple bbq type tanks look into an RV tank that mounts under the bus permently. I would pipe it with either marine grade custom sized propane hose/tubing or copper tubing with flared conections, it is only between 7-10psi so it would be the connections you would have to pay attention to. It being a bus I would look into adjusting your govenor as well. Skoolie.net has a lot of info.

    • Hi,
My husband and I have been running our bus on veggie for a few years now. It's 1980 9.0 diesel. We have been across the country, through the rockies and up and down the 101 freeway on the west cost ( through some major mountains) many times with no problems. If we do feel we need a little extra umph on some big hills, we simply flick our switch to veggie, then switch it back once were up the hill.

Oh, and we did it for around 600-700 bucks with parts from the store and some special orders. Check out our website, enchantedgypsy.blogspot.com for details on how we did it and where we have been. ~ Pixie
